Back in early December ’08 Check Point quietly released three new appliances for VSX. A quick note to those not familiar with VSX: it is Check Point’s virtual firewall product and has been around for almost ten years. VSX started out in the Telecoms (like Provider-1) and has gradually trickled down to the Enterprise and Mid-sized environments.

There are three models:

  • 3075 – Supports 5 to 10 VSs (virtual firewalls)
  • 9075 – Supports 10 to 150 VSs
  • 9095 – Supports 10 to 150 VSs and has more capacity

Deploying VSX got even simpler. You no longer have to spec out hardware, and install the software. Just rack the appliance, turn it on and you are ready configure. VSX is still available as software-only as well for those that like more control over their hardware build.

Basically what you have is special software builds that have been ported over to the UTM-1 3070, and Power-1 5070 and 9070 platforms. This is great because these platforms have proven to be very successful in 2008.

There are some pictures of the VSX appliances here, as well as a preliminary peek at what the specs look like.

This is cool stuff. Would be nice to see everything available on an appliance. Just plain simpler to install. No more hassling with the HCL, drivers, procuring hardware, etc.
