The Early Availability (EA) period for “Avatar” ended sometime in the past week. On Oct 3rd. Check Point posted the R71 Virtual Edition (VE). This is the second version of the VE product, and is tailored for the vSphere 4.0 release from VMware. The R71 version is able to take advantage of the VMsafe API created in conjunction with VMware. Most of the features of a Check Point security gateway are there, and as usual you will be able to use your existing SmartCenter or Provider-1 management infrastructure to fully leverage security in the “cloud.”
The R71 version allows you provide a separate firewall for virtual machine, as well as inspect the traffic between the VMs. The R71 blades are there as well, so you can also introduce IPS (for example) into the cloud. You can also control and audit the VMware environment which will be really powerful for those dealing with PCI requirements. Licensing has changed, and is now based on the amount of cores.
Take a look at the release notes for more information.
